Water Softeners, Iron Filters

and Reverse Osmosis

Having a basic understanding of ground water quality helps to ensure that your well is supplying potable water for your household. Along with human activities, water quality is affected by a combination of natural processes.

Most relate to chemical compositions underground.

Arsenic

Arsenic is a semi-metal element in the periodic table. It is odorless and tasteless. It enters drinking water supplies from natural deposits in the earth or from agricultural and industrial practices.

Approximately 90 percent of industrial arsenic in the U.S. is currently used as a wood preservative.  Arsenic is also used in paints, dyes, metals, drugs, soaps, and semi-conductors. Agricultural applications, mining, and smelting also contribute to arsenic releases in the environment.

Some people who drink water containing arsenic in excess for many years could experience skin damage or problems with their circulatory system, and may have an increased risk of getting cancer.

Fluoride

Fluoride is a metal that occurs in groundwater sometimes in excessive levels.

Reverse Osmosis is one effective way to filter fluoride from your water.

Hardness

The most common problem associated with ground water may be hardness. Hardness is caused from lime.  Hard water ruins fixtures as well as clothing and hair.  It causes mineral deposits to form on pipes and plumbing fixtures eventually reducing the diameter of the pipes. Softening your water helps dramatically with hard water problems.

Iron

Water generally does not come out of the earth without being rusty.  This is from iron.  Iron causes rust stains on fixtures, fences, landscaping, clothing, and much more. Iron naturally occurs in groundwater as most of our earth consists of iron.  Sometimes an iron filter will be required in addition to a softener if the problem is excessive.

Iron Filters
Iron Filters are usually required if a softener doesn't help with iron buildup.
